Recruiting Jews
"If you saw a dog going to be crushed under a car, wouldn't you help him?"
-Oskar Schindler
Schindler wanted to own the factory, so he can retool it for military use and get militia contacts. To achieve this, he looked for advice from Itzhak Stern, a Jewish accountant. He said, "Its troubles arose from the poor management, not from more fundamental causes."
Schindler planned to acquire the whole company to have less German supervision. When he did, he made the establishment produce enamel-coated cookware. In the beginning, there were 100 workers, and 7 of them were Jewish. While Schindler owned it, the previous manager, Abraham Bankier, actually ran the business.
As the circumstances became worse for the Jews, Schindler did more to help them. On December 4, 1939, he sent Stern to warn the Jews of a raid aimed towards them and saved several families.

"[On] November 1940, less than a year after Schindler's enamelware factory began operations, the Jews of Krakow- excepting only those who were in hiding or getting by on false papers- had been herded into a designated Jewish ghetto surrounded by fences and barbed wire... Because Jews could leave the ghetto only with a work permit, Stern asked Schindler to hire more Jewish workers. Schindler was happy to comply."
